Testimonials

What my community says

I offer chair/standing yoga, breathwork and meditation to Seniors at St. John’s in EL Cerrito every Tuesday. Read how their experiences have been since taking my class.

“Jess has taught at the El Cerrito Senior Center for several months. She teaches us different yoga positions and takes into consideration our age and ability. Jess is always asking how we are feeling and gives us encouragement during class. Her dedication to the center/group has us returning weekly. Jess is an excellent/dedicated instructor and is well liked by all at the senior center. With Jess’ instructions/stretches I have recovered from pain that I was experiencing in my shoulder. I am grateful for her passion in teaching us yoga.”

What is Adaptive Yoga?

Adaptive Yoga modifies traditional yoga practices to ensure they are accessible to all bodies and abilities. Using chair-based postures, gentle movements, breathwork, and mindfulness, participants can experience the benefits of yoga without needing to get down on the floor. Participants will explore gentle stretches, strengthening movements, breathwork, and relaxation practices—all from a seated position, with options to stand if appropriate.

Classes Emphasize:

– Safety and comfort
– Individual choice and autonomy
– Functional movement for daily life
– Nervous system regulation
– Mind–body awareness

No prior yoga experience is needed

Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga uses a chair as the primary support, making yoga accessible for individuals who:

– Use wheelchairs or mobility aids
– Have balance challenges
– Experience chronic pain, fatigue, or limited mobility
– Prefer or need to remain seated

Adaptive Movement

These classes incorporate slow, intentional movement designed to:

Improve mobility and joint health
Build functional strength
Support balance and coordination
Reduce stiffness and discomfort

Movements are always offered with variations and props to support diverse needs.

Education

Each class includes simple, empowering education to help participants better understand their bodies and the purpose behind the practices. Participants learn:

– How joints and muscles support everyday movement
– Ways to move safely and reduce strain
– How posture and breath impact comfort and mobility

This knowledge helps participants feel more confident and informed in their bodies—both in class and in daily life.

Yogic Principles

Classes gently introduce accessible yogic concepts such as:

– Breath awareness for calming the nervous system
– Mindfulness and guided meditation
– Compassion toward self and body
– Using movement and breath to support emotional regulation

These principles are offered in practical, non-religious language that supports daily life.
